The purpose of incorporating Feng Shui with Yoga to to creating balance and harmony within your yoga practice and that also includes post workout. It’s important that your yoga space is clean and invites tranquillity, and establishing an environment that’s full of good energy should be done meaningfully.

By incorporating the basic principles of Feng Shui into your practice, you can create a relaxing, calming, and positive space where you feel inspired and ready to stretch. You’ll also be showing your cats that you’re the Big Boss, and anything you own is only yours by your permission.

WHAT IS FENG SHUI?

There has been for over 3000 years an ancient Chinese philosophy that applies mathematics and human divination into the practice of applying interior design principles and specific placement of items to encourage the harmonization of your home, balancing the individual and connecting them with their environment.

Here are a 5 Feng Shui laws that are easy to follow for creating the best yoga practice possible:

DE-CLUTTER AND KEEP IT CLEAN

Cleanliness makes the mind pure. It may be as simple as that but once you get into the creative mood and start dispersing your energy, very quickly you find yoga blocks, gloves, ropes scattered all around your space, inevitably your yoga balls and weights clash with your incense stands and rip your bamboo trees.

Make sure the floor is clear and free of clutter. Have some extra room in your mat closet to store yoga clothes and other accessories so they’re out of the way. (Be sure to never keep shoes inside the closet – always keep them in the garage or dedicated space).

One of the best ways to synchronize peace with your yoga space is to to remove obstacles so you can freely move around.

THE COMMANDING POSITION

As you've learnt by now in Feng Shui, there is a divinity known as the commanding position and it symbolizes the most important part/object of the room as this is the centrepiece where the major energy flows through.

For your own reference the commanding position is usually the very first thing that draws your attention when entering a new room. You will want to make this your yoga mat! If possible, grab your yoga mat and move it to the commanding position of the room, it is not simply by putting it in the middle of the room but also what space and objects surround it that create that serenity.

CLEANING YOUR YOGA MAT

Your yoga mat will become home to dirt, sweat and bacteria, so you’ll want to make sure you clean it after each use. Be mindful of which products you use to clean it. Always test a small area before continuing to ensure it doesn’t leave a mark.

Yoga mat material that is 100% polyurethane leather or 100% rubber or the ideal for peace of mind cleaning, they can easily be wiped down with a microfiber towel after each use. You can also use oil-free solutions such as soap/vinegar/lemon juice in warm water.

BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT

We are sponges, absorbing energy everywhere we go. Energy emitted by light deeply affects your psyche not only that, your lighting will magnify the other colors in your space. It is therefore best to surround yourself with natural colors that are soothing and create calm.

Lighting represents the fire element and is the strongest manifestation of energy. It’s dominant influence on the quality of the qi in your yoga space means that it can help bring balance and harmony. Inadequate, poor, or harsh lighting can affect your mood and the way you feel and can make it impossible for you to relax.

CLEAR THE SPACE ENERGETICALLY

You can cleanse the space using sage, palo santo or incense. Try practicing cleansing with bells, chimes, or bowls as sound directly interacts with frequencies around you.

You can spray rose water or use essential oils around your space as smells can easily relieve anxiety and also remove the levels of negative vibrational energy that has been left behind. It is worthwhile to do this at the start and end of your session to firstly prepare the space for yourself and secondly to clear away the energy that was released during your session.
